2006 Yukon Election

Labour Issues Campaign a success

The Yukon Federation of Labour says their Labour Issues Campaign is achieving the desired result. YFL President Alex Furlong said, "We have been successful in getting all three parties to talk about labour's issues". Furlong pointed out that the top three of seven issues in the labour campaign -- child care, health care and privatization -- are all crucial. "All parties have had an opportunity to address the issues", Furlong's Press Release states. "It will be up to our members to have a say in who will form the next government".

NDP position clarified

Yukon Employees' Union president Laurie Butterworth met with NDP leader Todd Hardy to resolve the computer use investigation issue. YEU has published a Press Release describing he resolution.

Time for Accountability

Four years ago, the PSAC asked all three political parties how they would act on 12 issues if they formed government. The YUKON PARTY won the election with a majority of the seats in the Legislature. Click here to learn how they did.

Union responds to Edzerza's comments

September 29, 2006 - John Edzerza, former Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission in the Fentie government, was quoted in the media this week justifying that government's disasterous computer use investigation. YEU has responded in a Press Release transmitted to the media this afternoon.

Labour Issues Campaign launched
Yukon Federation of Labour President Alex Furlong announced a major Labour Issues Campaign at a press conference in Whitehorse today. The purpose of the initiative is to put issues of most concern to Yukon workers and their families on the agenda for the current territorial election campaign.

Furlong explained, "The YFL now has its largest-ever political action campaign. We have played a role in the past by raising issues in elections, but never to this extent." The campaign is modeled after similar successful campaigns utilized by the labour movement in Saskatchewan and nationally in federal election campaigns by the Canadian Labour Congress.

The goal is to engage more than 4000 union households and 8000 union voters in the territory. It is intended to raise awareness, to encourage voters to look hard at the issues, and to help them question candidates who come calling for their vote. Most importantly, it is intended to encourage union members to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Campaign details are available from the YFL website at www.yukonfed.com. Copies of the seven Issue Sheets can be downloaded there, along with a copy of the campaign brochure.
