WCB Training
Workers' Compensation training initiative
The Yukon Federation of Labour, in partnership with the Workers’ Compensation, Health & Safety Board, has announced a new training and education initiative. Under the program, YFL will provide information to Yukon working people about workers’ compensation. The goal is to foster an understanding of the system and facilitate a safe, early return to work for injured employees.
Up to now the Yukon lacked such a stakeholder-driven program. It will also address widespread misunderstanding about the history, importance and principles of workers’ compensation.
Claim costs in the territory have been rising for a decade. During this period the average duration of a claim more than doubled. WCB and YFL recognize that this trend is not sustainable if the Yukon is to maintain a healthy fund that meets the needs of all stakeholders.
Three levels of training will be offered:
- Level 1: a one-day session for 800-1000 workers, with basic information about workers’ compensation history, principles, and
the rights and obligations of workers and employers;
- Level 2: a one-day primer for activists, shop stewards and HR practitioners about return-towork issues and obligations (a prerequisite for Level 3); and
- Level 3: a 5 day in-residence course on return-to-work.
Project Co-ordinator Robin Round will oversee the initiative. Robin will work with Project Support Administrator Chantel Nordlund under the direction of the advisory board.
